Sara runs the 800m and 1500m races for the Spartans
1. Why did you choose to go to MSU?
I chose MSU for both its academics and athletics. As a freshman I had no idea what I wanted to study. At that time I was loosely considering teaching or hospitality business. I knew I would find my way and that there were so many options. From an athletic standpoint, I wanted to run Big Ten and was always a Spartan fan. I knew the coaching staff here was the best and that I would improve as a runner. I also wanted a big campus. I love the size of MSU and its beauty (especially in the fall and spring). I also love MSU football and basketball and the down-to-earth culture here in East Lansing as well as the camaraderie and Spartan pride!
2. Why did you choose SCM as a major?
Sophomore year, after trying a variety of courses, I realized I wanted to major in business. I searched out all the degrees and found that Supply Chain was the best fit for me. I like how there are lots of options within SCM and so many career opportunities after college. I know it is a growing field and that MSU’s is top in the country. I am doing an internship this summer for a major automotive corporation and I am already utilizing what I have learned at MSU in the workforce. The curriculum is spot on.
3. How do you balance track and school work?
First, I take courses in the summer. It is great that MSU offers online courses as well as two summer sessions. This helps me to keep my fall and spring terms more manageable at 12-13 credits per semester. The summer courses are not too bad and I am able to work and train during this time. Being on a team with daily practices keeps me on a tight schedule and forces me to prioritize each day and not waste time. I lead a structured life during the season but also have fun time to socialize with friends and family.
4. Are you involved in any SCM clubs/extracurriculars? For example, SCMA?
I recently joined SCMA but admittedly I have not participated in any events yet, but I plan to this coming year as my schedule will be a little lighter. I feel the club will really help me with networking and provide me with more information and experiences prior to entering the workforce.
5. Do you have a favorite professor or SCM class?
All of my professors have been great and come with a wealth of experience and knowledge in Supply Chain. As I have already mentioned, I am currently doing a summer internship in the automotive industry and the curriculum and what the professors have taught me are being used daily as I work in the logistical area of SCM.
6. What is your favorite part of SCM (logistics, purchasing, etc.)?
So far I have enjoyed the transportation side of SCM but my interest may change senior year where I will be exposed to more SCM classes at a higher level. I am really looking forward to the negotiations class I will have next spring as I have heard great things about it. I am looking forward to my senior year here at MSU. GO GREEN. GO WHITE. GO STATE!
